Stereo oder typisch?
Hört man von Afrika, denkt man an „Migration“. Oder an „Wirtschaftsflüchtlinge“. Nein? Dann gehörst Du wohl zu einer Minderheit. Denn der europäische Blick auf den großen Kontinent ist doch sehr egozentrisch gefärbt. Und das heißt meistens: negativ. Dass Afrika aber reich an Kultur ist und auch an Hochkultur einiges zu bieten hat, vergessen viele. Vielleicht ist alleine dieser Text-Einstieg schon zu stereotyp, aber dann lohnt er sich auf jeden Fall. Ein Besuch beim zweiten African Book Festival Berlin.

Es passiert was
Die Stars der afrikanischen Literatur sind dabei. Im Babylon treffen sie sich. Vom 4. bis 7. April. Es geht bei dem Literatur-Festival um Politik, klar. Um politische Umbrüche und natürlich geht es auch um Themen wie Migration. Der Fokus liegt auf dem Süden des Kontinents. Zum Beispiel Simbabwe. Aus diesem Land kommt auch die neue Kuratorin des Festivals. Die preisgekrönte Schriftstellerin und Filmemacherin Tsitsi Dangarembga. Ihr Heimatland war eine Diktatur, 30 Jahre regierte Robert Mugabe das südafrikanische Land.

Hungrige Straße
Einer der bekanntesten Gäste ist Ben Okri. Ein „literarisches Schwergewicht“, heißt es. Aus Nigeria stammt Okri. Sein Buch «The Famished Road», auf deutsch:. ‚Die hungrige Straße‘ von 1995, ist wohl sein populärstes Werk. Bei dem Festival wird Vielfalt gelebt, ob in Literatur oder Politik. Frauen und Männer, Schriftsteller*innen, Künstler*innen, Dichter*innen, sind dabei. Nicht nur aus Afrika selbst, sondern auch der Diaspora. Also den Ländern, in denen eine afrikanische Minderheit lebt. Es gibt Lesungen, Interviews, Podiumsdiskussionen, Film, Theater, Poetry Slam und Musik. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Bücher und das Handwerk des Schreibens.

Africa comes to Berlin for the second time. Or better: his authors. The „African Book Festival“ brings together the most famous authors of the continent. In Babylon, they meet. A short view. And that usually means: negative. Many forget that Africa is rich in culture and has a lot to offer in terms of high culture. The stars of African literature are there. In Babylon, they meet. From 4 to 7 April. The literature festival is about politics, of course. Political upheaval and, of course, issues such as migration. The focus is on the south of the continent. For example, Zimbabwe. From this country comes the new curator of the festival. Award-winning writer and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga. Their homeland was a dictatorship, for 30 years Robert Mugabe ruled the South African country.
One of the most famous guests is Ben Okri. A „literary heavyweight“, they say. Okri is from Nigeria. His book „The Famished Road“, in German :. ‚The Hungry Road‘ from 1995 is probably his most popular work. At the festival diversity is lived, whether in literature or politics. Women and men, writers, artists, poets, are there. Not only from Africa itself, but also from the diaspora. So the countries where an African minority lives. There are readings, interviews, panel discussions, film, theater, poetry slam and music. The focus is on books and the craft of writing.
